Few sporting moments have so captivated the Australian nation as Australia II’s 1983 America’s Cup victory and it has been brilliantly captured in a photographic tribute released by The Perth Mint to coincide with the America’s Cup 150th Jubilee.

The limited edition print features the classic aerial photograph of the pivotal moment when Australia II slipped ahead of US defender Liberty in the decisive seventh race. The photograph, awarded 1983 Sports Photograph of the Year by Life magazine, was taken by pre-eminent US photographer, Barbara Pyle, whose fascinating account of how she came to shoot the photograph also accompanies this historic collectable.
The original signature of Australia II helmsman John Bertrand is featured, along with a piece of sail used by Australia II in the final race and a gold-plated Boxing Kangaroo medallion.
The framed print is accompanied by a signed affidavit by Australia II project manager and crewman, John Longley, guaranteeing the authenticity of the sail and providing valuable information on its use throughout the race. John’s affidavit explains that the piece of sail included in the frame is from Australia II’s 4-1 genoa used throughout the 1983 campaign.
He goes on to state “…it was used on the final beat to windward of Race 7 of the match when Australia II held off Liberty in a 49-tack tacking duel to win the America’s Cup and break the New York Yacht Club’s 132 year grip on the Cup. It was the headsail worn by Australia II as she crossed the finishing line on September 26th 1983”.
Also accompanying the print is a large colour photograph of the sail, with Longley’s on-sail inscription reproduced in full on the back.
