49er Class

About the Class:

The 49er is the Olympic Class double-handed high performance dinghy, appearing for the first time at the 2000 Olympic Games.

Many of the principal features of the 49er are relatively new to the sailing world. The 49er is a slightly smaller version of the Eighteen-foot skiff, but with some major differences - it is one design and a double - handed vessel.

The 49er uses a double trapeze and as the name suggests, it is 4.99 metres in length. The boat was designed by Julian Bethwaite and was created to challenge the skills of skiff sailors worldwide.

The 49er was chosen as the Olympic class high performance dinghy by the International Sailing Federation in 1996 following its evaluation against eleven of the best dinghies in the world.
