Yachting Australia Safety and Sea Survival Course

Yachting Australia Safety and Sea Survival Course

The SSS Course:

The Yachting Australia Safety and Sea Survival Course was developed following the fatalitites of the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race.  The intensive 2-day course aims to deliver up-to-date information and current techniques in an interactive and safe learning environment.  The course includes a practical wet drill where candidates will become familiar with the deployment and use of a life raft, flare detonation in a controlled environment and theory sessions which should greatly enhance the chances of survival in the event of an emergency at sea.  This course is an essential learning forum for anyone who ever takes to the sea in a sailing vessel either professionally or recreationally.  Please follow the link for further information in all aspects of the syllabus (see section 6).

The certificate awarded conforms with the eligibility requirements of section 6.01 of the ISAF Special Regulations for category 0, 1 and some category 2 offshore races.

Overview

As a result of a lengthy inquest into the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, the NSW State Coroner made recommendations to the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) and Yachting Australia which have been adopted into the Yachting Australia Racing Rules of Sailing for 2009-2012.

The course is a practical and theoretical course which should be completed over a period of at least 16 hours (2 full days) . The course will be taught by Yachting Australia qualified instructors at Yachting Australia Recognised Teaching Centres. The recommended SSSC Instructor to student ratio for the theoretical component is 1:15 with a maximum class size of 20 students and the SSSC Instructor to student ratio for the "wet drill" is 1:10 with no more than 20 students undertaking the drill at once.
