Fremantle Sailing Club appoint new Sailing & Development Manager and Training Co-ordinator

Fremantle Sailing Club, Tuesday, 15 February 2005

Fremantle Sailing Club plays a key role in the Western Australian maritime community with involvement in a wide range of sailing activities including some of the highest profile yacht races like the Around the World yacht race stop-overs, numerous west coast offshore races, and the Fremantle Harbour Classic.

The Fremantle Sailing Club is pleased to announce the following appointments today:

SEBASTIEN DESTREMAU - Sailing & Development Manager

JACK BAXTER - Training Co-ordinator

Speaking on behalf of the Fremantle Sailing Club the General Manager Bruce Wallis said, "We are delighted Sebastien and Jack have accepted these positions. They are the ideal mix of experience and skill that we need to compliment the existing team of staff. We are confident they will do an excellent job together in revitalising the Training Centre and the Clubs training programmes as a whole."

"I welcome the opportunity of being back at the Fremantle Sailing Club in this new role," said Sebastien. "I am looking forward to working with Jack. He has a wealth of experience in the training field that will be especially beneficial to the juniors of the club. The Board has approved these positions and it is now up to my team and me to ensure ongoing development of the Club, its reputation and its membership," he added.

Fremantle Sailing Club is a very diverse club with over 2600 members of all ages participating in a wide variety of aquatic disciplines covering inshore and offshore racing, dinghy racing, offshore cruising, game fishing and angling, power boating and diving.

"It is important to provide a comprehensive training program for all members of the club to ensure safe boating practices as well as the opportunity to develop the skills of our sailing members" Bruce concluded.

Background Information

Sebastien Destremau - Sailing & Development Manager

Sebastien is a French born Australian citizen. He represented his native France in the America’s Cup 2003 as Tactician for "Le Defi Areva". At forty years of age, Sebastien has an impressive sporting record including four world sailing titles. He has organized, managed and competed in major yachting events for over 20 years, assisting clubs, sponsors, race organisers and competitors to gain maximum exposure for their campaigns and events. Sebastien has also worked on high profile and prestigious sailing events including the Volvo Ocean Round the World, Sydney-Hobart, Olympic Games, Multihull Grand Prix and was a spokesperson of the OzBoyz Challenge for the 2007 America’s Cup. He held the position of Club Coach at the Fremantle Sailing Club from 1999 to 2001 and takes up the Sailing & Development Manager’s role as of today.

Jack Baxter - Training Co-ordinator

Jack is a dedicated and enthusiastic yachtsman and teacher of sailing. He brings a lifetime of sailing experience gained in competitive yacht racing that includes three Americas Cup challenges as navigator, a coaching role during the 1987 Fremantle Americas Cup Regatta, more than a dozen Sydney-Hobart races and many West Australian and international offshore events in a skipper/navigator role. His cruising experience includes extensive coastal cruising from Fremantle to Sydney; both the warm route via the Kimberly coast and the bumpy rides across the Bight and west coast of Tasmania. Jack has also cruised the Tasman Sea and New Zealand, the Hawaiian Islands and the coasts and islands of the Italian and French Mediterranean. These sailing skills are combined with 25 years teaching and lecturing experience in maritime subjects in Western Australian high school’s and TAFE colleges. Jack holds Ocean Yachtmaster qualifications and a commercial masters ticket.
