Instructor Courses

The Yachting Australia Instructor Training Course provides for all who complete the course and the associated assessments to be eligible to gain accreditation from the Australian Sports Commission through the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS).  For details on the Yachting Australia Currency Policy click here

The Yachting Australia Instructor course is conducted and recognised nationally and is applicable to all schemes. As such, a person seeking instructor endorsement for multiple schemes need only undertake the course once and would then undertake an assessment for each scheme (or part there of) for which they wish to gain their instructor endorsement. Yachting Australia Instructor courses are run by the State / Territory Member Yachting Associations (MYAs). Please contact your relevant MYA for more details on when they are being held or look at the National Training Calender under Training on the Yachting Australia website.

Overview   This course builds on prior knowledge gained in the Assistant Instructor course and is intended to provide quality training to those who wish to instruct yachting to beginners and intermediates. This course is applicable across all the Training Schemes. Each of the Schemes has pre-requisite certification requirements before you can become an Instructor.
Outcomes The YA Instructor course will provide you with a good foundation in instructing technique. Following the course, you will be mentored whilst you gain instructing experience. You will then be able to undertake an assessment for each of the schemes you wish to instruct in.

Pre-requisites

In order to attend the course:

  • Must be 16 years of age
  • Be competent with the requirements of the scheme for the level you wish to instruct  - (you should get a copy of the logbook and ensure you can confidently complete each of the competancies)
  • Hold the YA Powerboat Handling Certificate

Where can I take the course?

Please contact the MYA in your state. Their contact details can be found here.

What to do afterwards?

On completion of the course, you will need to instruct for 40 hours under a qualified Yachting Australia Instructor and your Mentor, before you will be able to undertake assessment. Following an assessment, you will then be able to instruct at your club or YATC in the Scheme and to the level you have been endorsed. You may then wish to work towards gaining your Club Coach qualification or endorsement in another Scheme.

Requirements

To gain a YA Instructor Endorsement, you need to:

  • Be 16 years old
  • Hold the Powerboat Handling Certificate in the National Powerboat Scheme
  • Hold an Applied First Aid (Senior First Aid) Certificate which covers both the modules:
    HLTFA301B— Apply first aid
    HTLCPR201A - Performing CPR

The syllabus for the Instructor Course, complies with the requirements of the National Coaches Accreditation Scheme. During the process of the course you will work through the YA Instructor Workbook and your course scheme specific supporting texts and materials. If you are a sailing Instructor from overseas or have a similar qualification then you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning. Please contact Yachting Australia or your MYA for further details.
