Re-Validation information for SSSC Instructors

Safety and Sea Survival Course Review Information for Instructors

The main emphasis of the review has been to ensure that the information included is up to date and meets various regulatory requirements.

Things that stay the same

  • The outcome of the review does not mean any changes to the syllabus.
  • The full course will continue to be a 16 hour face-to-face session including theory, wet and flare drills.
  • Validity of the certificate will remain 5 years and the YA SSSC expiry date is printed on the certificate.

Things that have changed for instructors

A training session plan has been developed as a guide for SSSC instructors with:
  • a clear set of learning outcomes identified
  • Powerpoint presentation has been reviewed and updated
  • Any references to the Racing Rules of Sailing or the Special Regulations have been moved into the session plan, thus the powerpoint presentation does not over-emphasise the Racing requirements and is more relevant for offshore cruising sailors.
  • the content of the session has been reviewed to ensure it is up to date eg information regarding personal beacons etc

The administrative paperwork has also been reviewed and updated.  Deatils can be found under 'Information for Instructors and Principals'.

The Yachting Australia Safety and Sea Survival Update Course

Information on the SSSC Update Course can be found here. Please note that for candidates to be eligible to attend the SSSC Update course, they must supply evidence that they have completed at least 2500 offshore nautical miles in the last 5 years and provide evidence of having held SSSC certificate. We have created a Self Declaration Form to make it easier for candidates to comply with these requirements.

In order to be eligible to attend the SSSC Update Course candidates will need to produce:
  • a validated log or Yachting Australia Self Declaration showing at least 2500 offshore nautical miles achieved in the previous 5 years and
  • evidence having held a SSSC Certificate
Please note that the 2500 offshore nautcial miles can be made up of, for example, any Category 0 to Category 4 races or equivalent passages.

Both of these criteria are required to be satisfied for a candidate to be eligible to enrol in the Update Course rather than repeat the full course.  As a Yachting Australia SSSC Instructor it will be your responsibility to be satisfied that participants wishing to undertake the Update Course (rather than the full course) are eligible to enrol.
