Start Windsurfing
| Overview | This course is designed to provide a safe and enjoyable introduction to windsurfing for beginners. At this level, successful participants should have a thorough understanding of the safety requirements for continuing the sport away from a Centre. They should be capable of launching in light winds and sailing around a small triangular course by tacking and gybing and sailing on all points of sail. |

SYLLABUS:
1. Launching Starting and Landing
- Carrying the rig and board seoarately - attaching the rig
- Determining the wind direction to enable easy launching
- Understanding the terms upwind, downwind and crosswind
- Launching and landing the sailboard
- Climbing on, uphauling and maintaining the neutral position
2. Sailing techniques and stance
- Moving off and sailing across the wind on both tacks
- Stance, controlling power, stopping
- Steering the Sailboard by leaning the rig fore and aft
3. Manoeuvres
- Turning the board through 180 degrees using the rig
- Tacking by turning the bow through the eye of the wind
4. Rigging
- The names and uses of the main parts of the board and rig
- Rigging from the componenet parts
- Correct tensions, boom height and adjustments
5. Rescue Techniques and Safety
- Safety for Windsurfing and rules of the road
- Local regulations applicable to Windsurfingt
- Completing a full self rescue
- Understanding other options if self rescue fails
6. Sailing Theory
- The main points of sailing and sail positions
- The "No Go Zone" and how to get upwind
- Steering, luffing up and brearing away - centre of effort and lateral resistance
- Tacking upwind and gybing downwind
- Thr triangular course
- Sailing terms - port/starboard, windward leeward
7. Sailing Conditions
- The effects of on/cross/off-shore winds on a sailing area
- Moving water - tides, currents, rips and rivers
- Personal limitations and the wind scale
- Information resources - tides and winds
- Choosing an ideal spot to suit your experience
8. Equipment
- Wetsuits - types, uses and capabilities, the drysuit
- Boots, gloves, hats and types of PFD's (1, 2 and 3)
- All-rounder boards and rigs - sizes and suitability
- Care of your equipment - transporting, maintaining and insuring
9. Other Aspects and Options
- Basic freestyle for improving skills - sail spins , pirouettes
- Local clubs and associations
- Choosing an event - where to start
10. Sailing the Triangle
- Improved tacking with crossover technique
- Tacking and close hauled to achieve an upwin goal
- Gybing and broad reaches to return downwind
- The square run
- Getting around a triangle course.
