420 Worlds 2007

Natalie Francis, Friday, 5 January 2007

The 420 Worlds 2007 were held at the Takapuna Boating Club, Auckland NZ. The event will ran from 31st December 2006 to the 9th January 2007.

116 boats from 17 nations hit the water for the practice race, and the first day of racing saw some crews struggling in blustery southerly winds which peaked over 30 knots. Boats were towed to shore with gear damage, and a number of those capsized had difficulty righting their boats as the winds averaged 22 knots

67 boats were entered in the Open competition. A six race qualification series was sailed over the first two days to split the sailors into gold and silver fleets. The 49 boat Women's fleet will began their Worlds series from day 1 as one fleet.

Competition was strong in both fleets, with many experienced sailors competing against up and coming youth sailors such as 2006 World Champions Peter Burling and Carl Evans of New Zealand; Youth World Champions Sebastian Peribrusa and Santiago Masseroni of Argentina; Youth World runners up Sam Kivell and Max Taylor of Australia.

Australia's Sam Kivell and Max Taylor won the Pre Worlds Championship with a convincing lead over New Zealanders Derek Scott and Jamie Hunt.
