Instructor Training Course

The Yachting Australia Instructor Training Course

Yachting Australia's Instructor Training Course provides pathways for all who complete the course and the associated assessments to receive a Statement of Attainment for one unit of competence as partial completion of TAA40104 Certificate IV Training and Assessment - TAADEL301C - Provide training through instruction and demonstration of work skills and also be eligible to gain accreditation from the Australian Sports Commission through the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) .

Anyone who currently holds Yachting Australia Instructor qualifications will have the opportunity to apply for recognition of their competencies through the Recognition of Prior Learning procedure (RPL). RPL is also available for those who have gained experience in other facets of their life.

The Yachting Australia Instructor course is conducted and recognised nationally and is applicable to all schemes. As such, a person seeking instructor endorsement for multiple schemes need only undertake the course once and would then undertake an assessment for each scheme (or part there of) for which they wish to gain their instructor endorsement.

Yachting Australia Instructor Courses are organised by Yachting Australia in conjunction with the Member Yachting Associations (MYAs). Please contact your relevant MYA if you are interested in attending this course or being assessed to achieve the outcomes of the course.

Overview   This course builds on prior knowledge gained in the Assistant Instructor course.  It is designed to extend those skills and fully prepare those who wish to provide quality instruction to yachting to beginners and intermediates. This course is applicable across all the Training Schemes. Each of the Schemes has pre-requisite certification requirements before you can become an Instructor in that Scheme.
How does this course differ from the current Yachting Australia Instructor's Course?

The course content is the same, there are some differences in the assessments.  The differences in the assessments were a requirement of VETAB in order to gain recognition for a unit of competence.

As some Maritime Statutory Authorities require for training to be conducted by suitably qualified people in order to be recognised by the Maritime Authority, there is a need for these instructors to hold nationally recognised training qualifications, or part thereof.  An example of this is power boat training which is recognised for licensing purposes.

Yachting Australia has modified some of the assessment activities in order that, at any stage someone who has undertaken the Instructor's Course should not need to undertake additional training if they wished to be assessed to gain recognition for the Unit of Competence linked to this course.

How long does the course take? The Yachting Australia Instructor Training Course takes sixteen (16) hours of training plus time for assessment at a later date.  It is usually conducted over 1 weekend plus one additional day at a later stage for assessment; there are both practical and theory assessments. There are five topics covered in the course (listed below in greater detail).  The course may also be timetabled in a variety of different ways (eg conducted one night a week over several weeks).   Contact your MYA for details as to the delivery strategy planned for each course.
Outcomes The YA Instructor course will provide you with a good foundation in instructing technique. Following the course, you will be mentored whilst you gain instructing experience. You will then be able to undertake an assessment for each of the schemes you wish to instruct in.

 The Assessment Procedure

Before you are assessed for the Instructor certification, you will be required to instruct for at least 40 hours, whilst working through the Instructor Diary. This diary provides structured self learning by focusing on aspects of instructing for each session and tools for self assessment and obtaining feedback. At least 4 of these sessions should be conducted in the presence of your mentor, who will be able to provide further guidance and tips.

Once you have completed the diary and are nearing the completion of your 40 hours, you should contact your MYA to find a Yachting Australia recognised assessor.  The final assessment will then be carried out as followed:
  • Conduct 3 different sessions of no longer than 15 minutes each
  • These sessions should be about different topics, however topic selection is up to you. It must be relevant to the Scheme in which you are aiming to achieve Instructor recognition.
  • You will need to supply a session plan for each of these sessions and show that you can follow your session plans
  • Respond to a series of questions regarding your theoretical knowledge of instructing

All of the details and resources for the assessment are in the Instructor Diary.  Prior to requesting assessment, make sure you have a look as they will help you prepare for a successful assessment.
