The RYA-Yachting Australia Yacht Training Program was formed in 2008 when Yachting Australia and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) formed a partnership for the delivery of the RYA Cruising Scheme in Australia. This now provides international recognition of qualifications as well as a national harmonisation of course content and delivery.
Over the same time period, a new National Keelboat Program has been developed with significant industry consultation. The RYA/Yachting Australia Yacht Training Scheme and the National Keelboat Program have expanded the provision of courses and provide pathways for small boat sailors to progress seamlessly to offshore yachting, especially if they wish to pursue international sailing and employment opportunities.
Yachting Australia is working in partnership with the RYA because RYA qualifications are recognised and respected around the world and with more than 130 years experience, together we are able to provide a world-class training platform that will be locally administered and operated by Yachting Australia.
Recognition of RYA / MCA qualifications in NSW and QLD
NSW Maritime has developed new procedures for the recognition of RYA-YA Yachtmaster Certificates when also endorsed with STCW. These procedures will streamline requirements for crew with yachting qualifications to work on commercial vessels in NSW and provide improved flexibility to yacht owners and operators to obtain crew with appropriate qualifications. Marine Safety Queensland (MSQ) will now consider those holding an RYA-YA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore certificate for recognition as Coxswain/M5 restricted to sail. For more information click here.
