Australian Sailing Team 470 Sailors Claim Third At Chilly Spring International Cup

Nathan Wilmot & Malcolm Page
Nicole Brown, Monday, 14 April 2008

The Australian Sailing Team’s 470 Men’s crew of Malcolm Page and Nathan Wilmot have finished the 470 International Spring Cup in Sanary-sur-mer, France in third place.

The Australians were denied the chance to improve their position further when high winds saw the final two days of racing abandoned.

The Netherlands claimed victory (20pts), followed by New Zealand in second place (23pts), Australia in third (26pts) and Croatia fourth overall (30 pts).

It was a test of endurance for competitors in the last races of the regatta, as temperatures dropped and the high winds responsible for the cancellation of the final races blew down from the snow topped peaks behind the seaside Provence town. With athletes dropping weight to compete in the light wind conditions they will face at the Olympic Games, the cold conditions took their toll.

Page and Wilmot now head to Hyeres in France for the Semaine Olympique Francaise (19 to 25 April 2008) where they will join the majority of the Australian Sailing Team for what will be one the most important European regattas this year, with most of the Olympic sailing classes using Hyeres as a dress rehearsal for Qingdao.
