Hardys Australian Match Racing Championship - Mackenzie the big mover
Nick Rogers - Australian Match Racing Championship |
Cruising Yacht Club of Australia skipper Will Mackenzie was the big mover in todays second round of competition in the Hardys Australian Match Racing Championship on Hobarts River Derwent.
Mackenzie, 21, won four of his five matches, including significant wins against rival Sydney skippers Evan Walker and David Chapman, with these three young sailors and their crews heading the leader-board after the completion of the first round-robin.
Veteran of the fleet, Tasmania’s champion International Dragon class helmsman Nick Rogers, won two of his five matches after a scoreless first day, with fellow Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania member 18-year-old Elliott Noye, the 2010 Australian youth match racing champion, notching up his first win.
Conditions were again cold and wet for most of the day, with the wind varying from eight knots to a brief southerly that hit 24 knots, turning tactical racing into sound seamanship for the six crews sailing the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s Elliott 5.9 sports boats.
After the first round-robin, in which each skipper sailed each other twice, Mackenzie and Walker have each had six wins, Chapman five, while the New Zealand women’s team, skippered by Stephanie Hazard, has had four wins, Rogers two and Noye one win.
Mackenzie has come out of a successful youth competition that has included winning the Australian youth match racing championship in his last year (2009).
More recently, he sailed as mainsheet trimmer for West Australian David Gilmour (son of the legendary America’s Cup helmsman Peter Gilmour) in their second place in the Asian match racing championship. He has also sailed regularly on Syd Fischer’s TP52 in ocean racing.
After a scoreless opening day, Nick Rogers beat fellow Tasmanian Elliott Noye and day one leader, Evan Walker, but lost to Will Mackenzie, Stephanie Hazard and David Chapman.
Walker, after being unbeaten on day one, lost two of his five matches today, while Chapman sailed a steady series, winning three races today.
The second round-robin will be sailed tomorrow, with the semi-finals and finals on Wednesday.
