 January Nautical Newsletter

P&ampO Nedlloyd          Australian Sports Commission Schenker

Welcome to Nautical News, the e-news service distributed to Yachting Australia members and clubs whose e-mail details have been provided either by the individual or their sailing club. Articles are sourced with the help of the State and Territory MYAs - their logos are located at the end of this page, with links to the respective home pages

Welcome to the first Nautical News of 2004. January has again been a very busy month for all sailors with a multitude of national and international titles being fought out on our waterways. A great many local clubs have offered up their facilities for the various national and world titles over the period and our congratulations goes out to all those involved.

I have had the pleasure of visiting a number of events in what has been a very busy month. All have been inspiring in different ways. Sail Melbourne and the Skandia Geelong Week continue to make a big impression in international sailing circles.

As I visit clubs around the country the depth and talent of the volunteers that support our sport continues to be a constant source of encouragement. Our sport could not survive without them and often they are not properly recognised. On behalf of those that benefit from your continued efforts, thank you.

I was delighted to be in attendance at McCrae Yacht Club to see the support that the Australian Youth Championship now receives. After six years the event has continued to grow and is now recognised as the pinnacle of youth sailing in this country. Our thanks go out to the great team at McCrea who made the event such a success for the sailors.

It is a great pleasure to this month announce the involvement of Holden in both our Australian Sailing Team Fundraising Spectacular and the Australian Offshore Championships. It is encouraging to know that our great sport has the support of the corporate sector and in particular a great Australian icon like Holden.

2004 looks like being another busy year for Yachting Australia, our Member Yachting Associations and clubs, classes and sailors alike. I wish everyone a belated happy New Year and every success and safe sailing in 2004.

Phil Jones,
Yachting Australia, CEO

Trans-Tasman Recognition of Offshore Safety Course

Yachting New Zealand and Yachting Australia have formally signed an agreement for mutual recognition of Safety and Sea Survival Courses across the Tasman. This agreement has been struck as Yachting Australia is in the final stages of applying for ISAF Approval of the Safety and Seas Survival Courses (SSSC).

This is great news for sailors who complete their SSSC in Australia and wish to race in New Zealand. It will also make entry to the Australian Category One Offshore races much easier for sailors with the New Zealand qualification.

IRC and IMS Certificate numbers on the increase

We are pleased to announce that a recent tally of yachts rated under IRC in Australia shows a significant increase in fleet numbers. At the end of January 2004 (just seven months into the Australian rating year) we equalled the total number of yachts rated under IRC in 2002-3. And there are still five months of the current rating year to go!

With 364 boats rated under IRC in 2002-3, fleet sizes have increased greatly, with 78 new boats being rated under IRC in the first half of this season. Total figures at the end of the current rating year (30 June) are expected to be significantly higher than in previous years, demonstrating the popularity and suitability of the rule to many Australian yacht owners.

Meanwhile, IMS certificate numbers are remaining steady. With a slight decrease in IMS rated boats in Australia this year, however a growth internationally, IMS still proves to be continuing strongly. At the beginning of this year over 3700 yachts were rated under IMS around the world, with the largest fleet numbers being in Spain, Italy, Germany, USA and the Netherlands.
