In recent years, the Paralympics have been held soon after and in the same country as the Olympics. But it was only after Australia won the 2000 Olympic bid that people in this country started to think seriously about the Paralympics. When NSW agreed to host the 2000 Paralympics, sailing had merely been proposed as demonstration sport, and in one discipline only (the three-person keelboat). However, for the Sydney 2000 Games sailing became a definite medal sport in two disciplines (three-person keelboat and single person keelboat). Beijing 2008 saw the introduction of a third class into the Paralympic Games, the SKUD-18 (two-person keelboat).
