Safety Courses required for Pittwater-Coffs

Georgie Brown, Sydney, Thursday, 18 October 2001

Pittwater's Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club will host a series of courses that are vital pre-requisites for competitors in the Strathfield Pittwater-Coffs Harbour Race or other offshore races.

The courses include the AYF Safety and Sea Survival Course, First Aid and Radio Operator's Certificate of Proficiency.

The club's yachting administrator, Denis Thompson, says: "This year the Strathfield Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Race is celebrating its 21st anniversary. It is acknowledged as the largest warm water race on Australia's East Coast and we are expecting a record breaking fleet, with well over 100 top quality yachts expected to enter.

"Eligibility is only open to those yachts with the required certificates as stated in the Notice of Race. A limited number of spaces are available for all three courses and we urge all participants to book early to gain a place."

Thompson noted that:

* At least two crew members on the boat should have a Senior First Aid Certificate or higher qualification. Documentation of qualification must accompany the entry.

* At least two members of the crew should have an HF Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency issued by a relevant authority, or higher qualification. Documentation of qualification must accompany the entry

* At least 30% of the total crew of each boat must have completed within the last three years, an accredited Club Safety at Sea Seminar on all weather, liferaft practice, helicopter operations, use of flares and safety equipment

or

An AYF Safety and Sea Survival Course as per AYF Special Regulations Section 6. Documentation of completion must accompany the entry
