Rechichi & Parkinson Claim Victory at Kiel
Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson have claimed victory in the 470 class at the Grade 1 Kieler Woche in Germany.
The Western Australian crew were the second youngest in the fleet and were competing in the 470 at Kiel for the first time. The girls are the current ISAF World Youth Champions and, in their first year after youth competition, have achieved outstanding results on the European circuit. In May they finished second at the Grade 1 Holland Regatta, followed by sixth at the European Championship. Their preparation is looking right on target for the World Championship in San Francisco in August.
Conditions at the 123rd Kieler Woche were unusually light, fickle and warm. Racing was postponed or cancelled on a number of days and the sailors were often on water for many hours, racing late in the day.
Other Australians performed well, Mathew Belcher/Nick Behrens were 4th in the Men’s 470 and Lauren Jeffries/Rike Ziegelmayer were 7th in the Women’s.
In the Single Handed Laser, the run of podium finishes came to an end for Central Coast sailor Tom Slingsby, who finished a credible 6th, while experienced campaigner Brendan Casey finished 24th after high placings in the final races.
Current World Champion Krystal Weir finished 9th in the new Olympic Class, the Laser Radial.
