Yachting Australia announces new Paralympic Program Coach/Coordinator

Jo Dikkenberg, Friday, 23 December 2005

Greg Omay is Yachting Australia’s new Paralympic Program Coach/Coordinator.

In this role he will oversee the coaching program for the Australian Sailing Team – Paralympic classes, both in Australia and overseas, and will also be responsible for the development of Paralympic classes in Australia.

Originally from Tasmania, Greg is now based in WA and is actively involved in coaching and administrating the sport at a range of levels. He is currently the WAIS Sonar Coach, a Yachting WA State Squad Senior Coach and Onwater Manager at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

Greg is enthusiastic about his new position and the developments he has planned "I’m excited about the whole aspect of working with the Paralympic sailors. I’ve really enjoyed working with the Sonar team to date and am really looking forward to visiting all the states and doing some talent ID of potential sailors."

His position as Paralympic Program Coach/Coordinator will be based in WA and approximately one day per week, with interstate and international trips to correspond with athlete needs.

Yachting Australia’s Olympic and Paralympic Senior Coordinator Katie Culbert said "We look forward to Greg’s involvement with the Paralympic Program and are excited about the opportunities this will present to develop the program leading into Beijing."

Greg is an experienced sailor, having competed in a broad range of classes and events, including dinghies and keelboats. He has competed at World Championship level, as well as contesting ten Sydney Hobarts.

Greg is commencing as Paralympic Program Coach/Coordinator immediately and will attend the IFDS World Disabled Sailing Championship in Perth in January.
