Flinders Island Race – The tragic loss of Andrew Short and Sally Gordon

Craig Heydon, Sunday, 11 October 2009

Along with the whole sailing community, Yachting Australia is both shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic and untimely deaths of Andrew Short and Sally Gordon in the Flinders Island Race in the early hours of Saturday morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Andrew and Sally at this time.

Both Andrew and Sally were experienced and respected yachtsmen and loved what they did. They were well known to many in the sailing community and made an enormous contribution to the sport of offshore racing.  They will be greatly missed by all that knew them, especially the flag officers and members of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia who have not only lost two great friends and also two very keen competitors.

Yachting Australia wishes to acknowledge the skill and seamanship of the crews that came to the aid of PriceWaterhouseCoopers early on Saturday morning. Yachting Australia also wishes to express the thanks of the sailing community to those involved in the rescue, including the NSW Water Police, NSW Air Ambulance, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and the doctors and staff at Wollongong Hospital. Fortunately incidents of this nature in our sport are very rare, but when they do occur, the response from the rescue services is both prompt and professional, as it was on Saturday.

We wish Andrew and Sally fair winds and calm seas.
