Aussie 470 Crews Compete at Japanese National Championship
Two Australian 470 crews, Nathan Wilmot (AIS/NSWIS) and Malcolm Page (AIS/NSWIS) and Jenny Armstrong (AIS/NSWIS) and Belinda Stowell (AIS/WAIS) have just returned from the Japanese National Championships in Tsu, Japan.
In the very shifty weather conditions, Wilmot and Page won six of the eight races contested and took out the Championship with two races to spare. With more than 15 female crews competing in the championship Armstrong and Stowell finished 14th overall in the large open fleet.
The fleet was made up of crews from three countries - Japan, Australia and The Netherlands.
"With the conditions very similar to those experienced at the Athens Pre-Regatta [in August], the championship provided great practice for the Australian crews," reports National Head Coach and 470 coach, Victor Kovalenko.
"The Japanese always provide a good competition, with their top eight crews always competing in the top regattas throughout the year. The championship was very well organised and had a big fleet (75 crews) competing for the title. This is a good indication of the popularity of the class and looks good for the future of the class in Japan," Kovalenko added.
