Australian Match Racing Championship History

This event was traditionally hosted by Royal Perth Yacht Club.

In 1994 the RPYC ran the event twice in effect - one the AMRC and then a second regatta as a feeder to the Australia Cup. After that the AMRC became itself the feeder series for the Australia Cup with the AMRC Winner offered a 'wild card' entry. The AMRC winner had an extremely good track record in the Australia Cup, regularly finishing in the top half of the result and beating a number of more highly ranked skippers.

During the early years the AMRC was sponsored by the RAC of WA and then latterly by the Swan Brewery. For the last three years it has been sponsored by RPYC.

The event has always been run in equalised yachts hired from the West Australian Yachting Foundation. Initially the Farr 36s and more recently the Foundation 36s, they are the same as we used for the Grade 1 Australia Cup. Both boats and their standard of equalisation have earned high praise from the numerous international skippers who have sailed them over the past ten years. A number of skippers including Neville Wittey and Gordon Lucas have sailed most years, adding to the character of the event
