RISK MANAGEMENT

A Practical Resource for Clubs©

This Risk Management Resource has been compiled by Matthew Finnis from the sports law department of Rigby Cooke for Yachting Victoria. It is offered as a basis of assisting a Club in developing its own Risk Assessment and Management Plan.

Before using this Resource it is advisable that some form of education / training be undertaken in it’s use that will address the background, theory and methodology behind the resource. The advantages in this process include:

Enhancement of club official’s understanding of the risk management process,

Motivation of club officials to work through the process at their local club,

Enabling questions to be addressed that club officials have about risk management and liability,

Promoting the sharing of experiences in risk identification and treatment strategies amongst volunteers from different clubs.

It should be noted that this resource has been produced to deal only with matters relating to boating and on water activities – not to general club management. Further, the Resource is a practical guide which requires Clubs to take their own steps to assess and treat the risks included in the Resource, as well as others which are specific to their own environment and operations.
