Entries closing for 170th Australia Day Regatta

Peter Campbell, Monday, 16 January 2006

Australia Day, 26 January 2006 marks the running of the 170th Australia Day Regatta on Sydney Harbour, the oldest continuous sailing regatta in the world.

The event is organised and conducted each year by the Australia Day Regatta Management Committee, a voluntary group of active yachtsmen from various Sydney clubs who give up many hours of their time to plan the regatta.

The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Sydney Amateur Sailing Club, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and other many other clubs in New South Wales give significant support to the operational running of the regatta.

The Notice of Race and Entry Form for the 170th Australia Day Regatta on Sydney Harbour are available on the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron website – www.rsys.com.au - and entries close with the Squadron at 1700 hours tomorrow, Tuesday, 17 January.

The Notice of Race and Entry Form for the Harbour regatta and the traditional Australia Day ocean race from Sydney to Botany Bay and return are also available from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.  The race is a club Short Ocean Pointscore and Ocean Pointscore event and is included in block season entries, but to be eligible for the Australia Day perpetual trophies yachts must advise the CYCA Sailing Office.

The CYCA will accept casual entries for the Australia Day ocean race until early next week.

The ocean race, for the City of Sydney Sesquicentennial Trophy, will start from Sydney Harbour at 11am on Australia Day whilst the 170th Australia Day Regatta program will begin at 1.30pm.   The Harbour fleet will include the spectacular Historical Skiffs, replicas of the famous 18-footers that races on the Harbour in the early part of the last century, as well as modern state-of-the-art 18-footers, and the one-design and other keelboat classes that regularly race with Sydney clubs.

Flagship for the regatta will be HMAS Stuart, which will be on station north of Clarke Island, with the RAAF, and the Army providing spectacular demonstrations to continue the Australian Defence Forces’ historic involvement with Australia Day.

Whilst the main 170th Australia Day Regatta maintains the tradition of being an event for keel yachts and is held on Sydney Harbour and offshore, the Management Committee has expanded the overall concept of an Australia Day Regatta to include regattas on waterways that include Lake Macquarie, Brisbane Waters,  Pittwater,  Manly, the Parramatta River, Botany Bay, Lake Illawarra and the Chipping Norton Lakes.
