Intermediate Windsurfing

Overview  
This course is designed to improve the participant's windsurfing techniqe so that they are capable of sailing a triangular course with competence, including sail trim, centre-board adjustment and improved stance, in light to moderate winds.
Length 12 hours
Outcomes    You will be capable of sailing a longboard in at least 8 knots of wind and gain and Improving Techniques Certificate.
Pre-requisites Must have completed Basic Skills by either doing the Start Windsurfing Course or through direct assessment
What to do afterwards? Continue training in windsurfing to gain the Advanced Certificate

 

SYLLABUS:

1. Launching Starting and Landing
  • Launching with rig and board connected by lifting stern
  • Starting in shallow water - rope and beach starts
  • Putting the centre-board down whilst sailing
  • Returning to shore by reversing the above
  • Leaving and returning on the most advantageous tack
2. Sailing techniques and stance
  • Improved stance on all points of sail - responding to gusts
  • Improved steering using body weight and rig
  • Adjustment of centre-board position as required
  • Correct sail and board trim
  • Sailing with confidence around a triangular course

3. Manoeuvres

  • Turning and stopping in restricted areas
  • Improved gybing using body weight and rig
  • Improved tacking from close hauled by using body weight and rig 
4. Rigging
  • Choosing the correct rig to suit the conditions
  • The names of all parts of the sail
  • Correct adjustment of mast, boom and head extensions
  • Fine tuning the rig using downhaul, outhaul and battens
  • Useful knots - hitches, bend and the bowline

5. Rescue Techniques and Safety

  • Competent self rescue in 10 knots or more
  • Being towed by another sailboard and by a boat
  • Rescuing and towing another sailor and board upwind
  • Self help and carrying essential spares
  • More about hypothermia - fitness and fatigue 

6. Sailing Theory

  • Centre-board and sial positioning on all points of sail
  • How a sail works - sail shape and wind strength
  • Why a board will sail close-hauled
  • Knowledge of sea terms and all points of sail 

7. Sailing Conditions

  • Factors affecting sailing conditions - winds and tides
  • Sea breezes and land breezes
  • Recognising tides, currents and rips
  • Choosing a sailing venue - legal restrictions
  • Recognition of deteriorating weather throughy visual sky signs 

8. Equipment

  • Different types of baord, their uses and liitations
  • Wetsuits and other protective clothing available
  • An introduction to the harness - types, use and rigging
  • The relationship between volume, wind strength and body weight

9. Other Aspects and Options

  • Different competition formats
  • Freestyle - pirouettes, tail sinks and sailing inside the boom
