Welcome to Nautical News, the e-news service distributed to Yachting Australia members and clubs whose e-mail details have been provided either by the individual or their sailing club. Articles are sourced with the help of the State and Territory MYAs - their logos are located at the end of this page, with links to the respective home pages. Those who have visited the website recently will have noticed a few changes, courtesy of our very smart technical team here at Yachting Australia. Most obviously there is a new look to the site, reflecting our new brand. Over the next few months, MYA sites will also be updated as they adopt the new brand. You may also have noticed links on the left side of the site to a series of on-line services including MyClub, MyCentre MySailor and the Boat Yard Classifieds. MyClub has been available for over two years and is well used by many clubs to manage membership. The system already allows clubs to email members and export data for mailings. We are now looking at ways to make available facilities that will be even more useful to clubs for managing their activities. Services like managing club subscriptions and on-line entry have been requested. Those clubs that don't yet use my MyClub may wish to contact their MYA for further information and a log-on. MyCentre is brand new and, as the name suggests, is designed to support Yachting Australia Training Centres. Through MyCentre, Centres can promote the facilities offered and the courses run, enrol students at their Centre, mark results and maintain records allowing on-going communication with those that have been through the Centre. Response to demonstrations of MyCentre has been very positive. It will be rolled out to Training Centres over the next few months. MySailor is also new and aimed at individuals. When you receive your next Yachting Australia Membership Card, the attached letter will contain your own user ID and password. You can use this to log on to MySailor. Here you can check and amend your contact details, view the qualifications that we have recorded for you, see what courses are being run by your Training Centre (if you have previously enrolled on a course), complete your own on-line log, indicate any special interest groups, change the password that we have issued to you, indicate how you would prefer us to communicate with you and place an advert in the Classified area.....and this is just the start. Through MySailor you can place and manage your own adverts to buy or sell boats or equipment and look for or offer your services as a crew. The Classifieds are a free service to members. Whilst anyone can view the adverts, only members can put them up. If you can't wait to have a look around MySailor and we already have your email address (and if you are reading this newsletter we probably do!), then click here follow the instructions and we'll e-mail you a User ID and password. The next stage of our IT development will see sites provided to clubs. These will be linked to the national database and use the same maintenance tools that are now available to MYAs and Yachting Australia. Facilities will include an information management system to allow maintenance of webpages; a calendar (with state and national events appearing on the MYA and Yachting Australia sites respectively); Classifieds allowing club member adverts to appear on club sites; committee listings; direct MyClub access and much more. Take time to look at the website and the on-line tools now available, but remember to log on regularly because it will be different next time. Your feedback is always welcome. Good Sailing Phil Jones, CEO
Wrap Up of State Briefing Sessions Over the past two months, Yachting Australia has held a series of briefing sessions in states/territories around Australia. The Yachting Australia staff received great response and positive feedback by many delegates who attended these sessions. The aim of the briefing sessions were to inform clubs and sailing schools of upcoming improvements to Yachting Australia training courses and the new IT tools for recording and retaining participants in sailing. Below is a wrap up of how the briefing sessions were received:
The immediate steps to take for instructors & training centres are as follows:

How will clubs benefit from OnBoard?
OnBoard is a national participation program, initiated by Yachting Australia and supported by the Australian Sports Commission, to encourage greater participation in sailing by developing and highlighting pathways and opportunities for new sailors to pursue sailing. Yachting Australia has taken a unique approach to develop the pathways that will provide clubs with the tools and skills to actively recruit new members to their club. A club who becomes an OnBoard Partner will have access to a national database of individuals who have expressed an interest in our sport and are looking for additional sailing participation opportunities. The OnBoard Program aims to provide education to club volunteers to develop skills to assist them to attract and recruit new members, as well as developing a network of club contacts to swap best practice ideas. OnBoard Partners will also have assess to branded materials to display at their club indicating they are a part of the program. By developing these pathways and providing additional skills to clubs to recruit new members Yachting Australia hopes to increase the number of people participating in our sport. New members will also result in ongoing membership revenue to clubs and assess to a larger volunteer base to help support your club activities. All Member Yachting Associations of Yachting Australia have been invited to be a part of the OnBoard Program. If they adopt the program they will appoint a State Development Officer utilising funding provided by Yachting Australia. The State Development Officer will be your key contact point in your State/Territory and will assist your club in getting the most out of the program. Unfortunately the program will not be available to clubs in Western Australia as the Yachting Association of WA has elected not to be a part of the program at present. Yachting Australia has been delivering briefing sessions to clubs on OnBoard over the past 7 weeks and over the coming weeks clubs will also receive a package of information on OnBoard, further explaining the program. Three of Yachting Australia’s Premier Events are to be Contested in the Coming Month
The Women’s Match Racing event will be held from the 11-14 September on the waters of the Derwent River. Hosted by the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, and sailed in Elliot 5.9’s, this event is sure to be a nail biter with some extremely close competition expected. The Australian Team Racing Championship will be contested at the Docklands in Melbourne. This championship is usually won not only based on superb boat-handling, but also is a true test of tactical skills and teamwork. Pacers are the class being used for the event. Teams from Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania will compete a number of short races over three days (beginning 19 September) to fight for the title. The Youth Match Racing nationals are being hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia from the 3-5 October. The new Elliot 6’s will be used for this event, which will be sailed on Sydney Harbour. Youth Match Racing is becoming an increasingly competitive discipline, and the event will be a great display of our nations youth talent. Notices of Race, Sailing Instructions, results, reports and photos from all three events will be posted on the Yachting Australia website in the Events section over the coming weeks.

Up Coming Events ISAF World Sailing Championship Australian Olympic class sailors will congregate with the world's best in Cadiz in south-west Spain for the 2003 ISAF World Championship from 11-23 September 2003. The World Championship is sure to produce the very best competition with Australian sailors in the 470 women, 49er, Finn, Yngling, Star and Mistral men and women classes, sailing to qualify the nation in their respective classes. The 470 men, Tornado, Laser and Europe classes have already qualified. Also, the Aussie sailors will be fighting for Olympic nomination points, with all classes except the Star and Lasers competing for those important points. Europe sailor Sarah Blanck (AIS/VIS) and Tornado Sailors Darren Bundock (AIS/NSWIS) and John Forbes (AIS/NSWIS) will be looking to retain their World Championship titles. Blanck improved on many of the goals she set for herself at the recent Olympic test event in Athens, finishing 6th overall, while the Tornado pair are well on track, having just taken gold at the Athens 2003 Regatta. The gold medal success at the Athens 2003 Regatta for 49er crew Chris Nicholson (NSWIS) and Gary Boyd (NSWIS) provided them excellent preparation and confidence coming into the Worlds. Three venues have been chosen to host this major event, whilst all are situated around the Bay of Cadiz each have very different virtues. Puerto de Rota will host the 470 class, Centro Nautico Elcano the Laser class, and Puerto Sherry the Mistral, Finn, Yngling, Europe, Star, Tornado and 49er classes. Based on the success of a recent course held at the Cruising Yacht Club, Yachting NSW intend running mini-Point Wolly courses in a format that they hope is more flexible for the members: up to 30 participants, evening sessions or over a couple of weekends rather than an entire weekend etc. Yachting NSW intends to run these in the various regions where there is demand.
