The month of February brought out the true spirit of sailing. I am pleased to report that the Australian Sailing Team Fundraising Spectacular was a national success with the support of sailors, businesses and friends of Yachting travelling from all over Australia to attend the event. The generosity and kind wishes received have been overwhelming. Yachting Australia very much appreciates the sponsorship and support provided by Holden for this event.
The 2004 Australian Sailing Team are now in full preparation for the European sailing season. We wish them every possible success in this important year.
The High Performance Unit will be submitting the nominations for the 2004 Australian Olympic Team to the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) in the coming weeks. At this time Yachting Australia will make a formal announcement of the names of the nominated athletes. The AOC will then select the team and make the official announcement of the selected athletes.
Good sailing.

2005 to 2008 Yachting Australia Blue Book
The 2005 to 2008 Racing Rules of Sailing are to be implemented across the world on 1 January 2005. This is an ISAF decision, and whilst we will implement the plan, it will create some difficulties. Not only is this half way through our season, but it is at the height of our Championship season with many events starting immediately after Christmas and extending into the New Year. It will also impact on World Championship and other International events (such as SailDownUnder) held here at that time or in early 2005.
We plan to have the new Blue Book available in bookshops and chandlers from mid November, and this should allow plenty of time for sailors to familiarise themselves with the new RRS. We will also, once the new RRS shortly become available from ISAF, produce an advice describing the changes of rules and Australian prescriptions. Note that the Yachting Australia Special Regulations will remain in force until 30 June 2005 (this will necessitate the retention of the 2001 to 2004 Blue Book for six months). This latter is considered to be a lesser evil than having to change any equipment that may be different between the 2001 to 2004 and 2005 to 2008 Regulations
If a series starts before 1 January 2005, it could be wise to complete the series under the 2001 to 2004 rules that applied at the start of the series. In some racing areas however, such as the Swan River, Sydney Harbour, etc where different fleets are conducting concurrent regattas on tight waters it may not be possible to have different "switch on" dates. In these circumstances close liaison between Organising Authorities will be necessary to avoid any confusion.
It is suggested that subject to the above liaison, the following timetable be considered:
Both the NoR and SI will need to be specific and include the year reference in the rules clause, including Club 2004/05 season's SI. |
Yachting Australia Board Ends Uncertainty Over National Training Schemes
|
The Board of Yachting Australia this month confirmed that Yachting Australia Training (YATL) has been asked to put the further revision of all courses and support materials on hold pending additional market research and consultation with stakeholders. All Training Centres that wish to continue to offer Powerboat, GISBS and other TL Courses may do so by signing and returning the Services Agreement for Training if they have not already done so.
The National Powerboat Scheme is the only recently revised scheme that will be available until there has been full consultation with current Training Centres regarding their detailed requirements. As has always been envisaged, the Get into Small Boat Sailing (GISBS) and other TL schemes will remain in place until such time as the revised schemes are available.

The Yachting Association of NSW Becomes Yachting NSW
|
At a Special General Meeting on Tuesday 27th January, Clubs approved the State Authority’s change of name from The Yachting Association of NSW to Yachting New South Wales.
On the surface, this may not seem significant, however the change of name brings the State Authority in line with Yachting Australia and the majority of State Yachting Authorities, giving yachting a national branding.
"The timing of this event is ideal", said Yachting New South Wales’ General Manager, Andrew Hamilton, "as it coincides with the adoption of the Yachting Australia brand and logo." |

2004 Lidgett Trophy
|

Daveys Bay Yacht Club
Click here for a full report and results from the 2004 Lidgett Trophy.
|
Davies Bay Yacht Club, possibly the most unlikely but definitely the most successful club to host a Junior Coaching Regatta.
This year the Davies Bay Yacht Club hosted the fifth Lidgett Trophy - an amazing success story, with approximately 150 competitors this year.
The regatta was originally a Sabot Class only event but with gentle persuasion, and co-operation between the other junior classes and Yachting Victoria it has expanded to include other classes.
The regatta is a Junior Regatta based on the philosophy of Yachting Victoria's successful coaching regatta Go For Gold. Jeni ( Danks ) Lidgett at the coaches briefing emphasised to the very impressive array of coaches who had given their time to the project, that the emphasis was on learning and encouragement.
