Dolly Pin Up Sailor
One of Yachting Australia's 2004 National Olympic Squad members has made it big time! Forget the newspapers, Australian Sailing, even the Australian Sports Industry Awards, it's 'Dolly Magazine'.
At least this is the view of Nathan Outteridge's 13 year old sister and all her school friends, after a small article appeared in the June edition of Dolly (p128) on Nathan and his sailing exploits along with a photo.
'Come to think of it I can't recall too many other elite sailors that have made it into Dolly, although I must confess I haven't read too many Dolly Magazines,' a proud Tony (father) Outteridge said.

Australian Crew Crowned 470 World Champions
Last year they finished second at the World Championship in Cadiz, this year they strived to do one better in Zadar, Croatia, and succeeded. Australia’s Nathan Wilmot (AIS/NSWIS) and Malcolm Page (AIS/NSWIS) were crowned the world’s newest sailing champions taking out their first 470 class title.
This win will be a big boost of confidence for the Aussie pair now preparing for the European Championships in Warnemunder, Germany.

In the women’s fleet, Sydney 2000 gold medallists Jenny Armstrong (AIS/NSWIS) and Belinda Stowell (AIS/WAIS) made a miraculous surge in the final series of the world championship to finish 4th overall.

Two Aussies Finish Top Ten at  Laser Worlds
At the recent Laser World Championship Michael Blackburn (AIS/NSWIS) and Tom Slingsby (NSW) finished 3rd and 7th respectively.
Blackburn battled with Robert Scheidt (BRA) for the top spot the entire regatta. The pair showcased some exciting and competitive 'match racing' - Scheidt eventually securing his 7th world title in the class.
Youngster Tom Slingsby proved he is an up and coming star finishing 7th, ahead of many of the more experience Laser class sailors.
Placed second going into the final day of racing Blackburn still had a shot at the title, 'before the start of the final race my coach Arthur Brett did the calculations and I could have won the regatta by keeping Robert Scheidt back to 5th or worse. The American had a harder task, having to finish 1st in the race to beat me....I decided trying to slow Robert down (and ignore the American’s small chance) was the thing to do.'
Read Blackburn's wrap up report on the Yachting Australia website.
In other World Championship news Nicky Bethwaite (AIS/NSWIS), Kristen Kosmala (AIS/NSWIS) and Karyn Gojnich (AIS/NSWIS) recently finished 9th at the Yngling Worlds in Spain.

Instructor Insurance Cover Improved
Yachting Australia has recently conducted a thorough review of the Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Policy which is provided as a benefit of Registration for Instructors and Coaches.
That review highlighted several areas of concern, where it was felt that the cover in place was not adequate to fully service the needs of Instructors and Coaches. A new policy was sought and has been secured and all financial Yachting Australia Instructors and Coaches are now covered by the superior cover. Full policy details will be available from our website shortly.
In order to cover the cost of this increased cover, Instructor Registration for 2004 will be $80.00 inclusive of GST. Yachting Australia understand that this is a substantial increase, but we feel that the increase in cover more than justifies the increased registration fee.

NSW Youth Squad April Camp
 |
The 2004 NSW Youth Squad held their first training camp of the year at the end of April. The talented young group of sailors gathered at Wangi Wangi RSL Sailing Club on Lake Macquarie for three days of intensive coaching and training with specialist coaches.
The squad were joined by members of the 2004 Australian Youth Team, as they continue preparing for competition at the ISAF Youth World Championships in Poland in July.
