At last updating your Safety & Sea Survival certificate has got easier. In simple terms if you’ve ever completed a Yachting Australia Safety & Sea Survival course, you can attend a one-day refresher, regardless of how long ago or when it expired. We’ve also removed any requirement for recording sea time.
A survey of around 1,500 certificate holders identified time and cost as barriers to attending a refresher course, so we’ve redesigned the training to make it shorter and more relevant. Sadly we found only around 16% ever updated their certificates, so considering the changes in technology and equipment, this was not a good safety outcome. Of those who did attend, 99% were racing sailors and doing this because of rule requirements so the content obviously needs to meet their requirements.
Updated courses are now purposely designed for racing sailors but are still useful for anyone who has previously completed a Safety & Sea Survival course. The 8 hour course still includes practical in-water survival techniques and liferafts, but focuses far more on lessons learned from recent incidents, the latest technology, and changes to equipment requirements.
We have 14 training Centres across Australia delivering the Safety and Sea Survival course, contact the list below for course availability.
