Boating Summit Down Under shapes up for world view

Ursula Bishop, Wednesday, 28 January 2009

The National Marine Safety Committee (NMSC)’s Summit on recreational boat standards will provide an insight into how the standards used in the world market are changing to meet today’s challenges

The National Marine Safety Committee (NMSC)’s Summit on recreational boat standards will provide an insight into how the standards used in the world market are changing to meet today’s challenges.

The Summit Down Under, to be held on 21-22 May on Queensland’s Gold Coast, will feature speakers from the international standards committee on small craft (ISO/TC188), which is meeting on the Gold Coast just prior to the Summit.

The Summit coincides with the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and gives marine industry delegates the chance to hear international experts discuss the latest developments in recreational boating standards and how they will affect the industry. NMSC CEO Ms Margie O’Tarpey said the NMSC has worked hard to improve basic safety standards for recreational boating in Australia and that the next step is to take a more prominent role in the international standards arena.

“The Summit’s seminar planned for the 22 May will look into the harmonisation of standards as well as emerging safety issues affecting the design and construction of recreational boats and the impact of those issues on standards,” Ms O’Tarpey said.

“Aligning the standards used in the US and Europe would make life a lot easier for everyone – including Australian companies
that use both sets of standards.

“The Summit is a way of engaging our local recreational boating industry in discussion with their world counterparts”.

Australian based ISO Small Craft Committee Chairman Nik Parker explained that the TC188 is currently working on standards covering safety topics including structure (specifically keels), stability (with a focus on multihulls and smaller boats), fire protection (including CO detection) and new technologies such as ‘fly-by-wire’ steering systems and engine emissions.
“The latter is a key subject for the recreational marine industry keen to play its part in understanding and if necessary. reducing the impact of boating on the environment,” he added.
Australian recreational boat manufacturer Mustang Marine will join local stakeholders at the Summit. Mustang’s Design Manager Graham Langdown is on the Australian Mirror Committee to ISO.

“We are familiar with both the EU and US requirements and all boats leaving the factory, irrespective of whether local or EU bound, are CE Certified,” Mr Langdown said.

“However, the interpretation and application of both European and US requirements is challenging to say the least.

“The Summit will help explain how best to move forward to a common set of world standards.”

Delegates can also attend the Summit Down Under dinner on the preceding night (21 May), as it is an ideal opportunity to meet with the ISO experts.

Register now! The Early Bird offer closes on 31 March 2009. For more details go to www.nmsc.gov.au  or call (02) 9247 2124.

Page and Belcher claim 470 Class Australian Championship with text book sailing in Port Lincoln

Craig Heydon, Wednesday, 28 January 2009

Olympic Gold medalist Malcolm Page and new skipper Mathew Belcher have dominated the fleet at the 2009 Olympic 470 Class Australian Championship, winning 10 out of 11 races on their way to the national crown.

Olympic Gold medalist Malcolm Page and new skipper Mathew Belcher have dominated the fleet at the 2009 Olympic 470 Class Australian Championship, winning 10 out of 11 races on their way to the national crown.

The Australian Championship finished in Port Lincoln on Australia Day with Page and Belcher kicking off 2009 in style in the aptly named boat, Australia.

“The last week has been great for Mat and I, it was the first time that I felt that we were really working as one team and our results showed that,” said Page.

“We had a good week and saw the wind really well, Boston Bay is an amazing place to sail but in saying that the conditions are very changeable which makes it a difficult place as well,” he said.

The only time Page and Belcher failed to lead home the fleet was in race eight when West Australians Mathieu Higgins and Tim Rechichi, brother of Olympic gold medalist and Australian Sailing Team member Elise Rechichi, crossed the line first, with Page and Belcher finishing third.

Victoria crew Sam Kivell and Max Taylor claimed second place in the series with a consistent weekend which included four second finishes and five thirds.

Shane Hughes and Felix Paterson finished third overall and on the way claimed three second places to Page and Belcher.

Page was impressed with the level of competition and along with Belcher and Australian Sailing Team head coach Victor Kovalenko, who worked with the fleet during the regatta.

“The young guys all sailed very well and Victor agrees with me in saying that the level of the fleet at the Australian Championship was as good, if not better, than that competing at the ISAF World Cup in Miami at the moment,” said Page.

“Mat and I will continue to work with the Australian Sailing Development Squad at a number of training camps in March, April and May before we head off to Holland to begin our European summer campaign in late May.”

“We’ll spend the next month apart and while it would be good to keep on going and build on the form we currently have we need to understand where we are in the bigger picture of the Olympiad cycle,” he said.

Sailors honoured with Australia Day Awards

Craig Heydon, Tuesday, 27 January 2009

Yachting Australia would like to congratulate the association’s members who were rewarded for their support and service to sailing with Medals of the Order of Australia (OAM) during the 2009 Australia Day celebrations

Australian Sailing Team members Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson were awarded the medal after their heroics at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games where they won gold in the 470 Women’s Class.

Elise said that the award came as a complete surprise.

"It was certainly not something I had expected, because it was something I had always associated with some sort of breakthrough in medicine or something like that," said Elise.

"I was just doing my job, and the job was to get a medal at the Olympics - so to receive this is pretty special," she said.

They were joined by fellow gold medalists Malcolm Page and Nathan Wilmot, who were Olympic champions in the 470 Men’s Class. The Medal of the Order of Australia capped off an amazing year for Page and Wilmot who dominated their competition across the globe on their way to Olympic gold.

Also representing sailing in the 2009 Australia Day Honours List was Eli Demeny who received a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to people with disabilities through her work with Sailability Manly and various schools in the neighbouring area.

Eli was a founding member of Sailability Manly and has been an integral part of the club’s success since its inception in 1997, holding positions including President, Commodore and Club Secretary.

Gold medalist headlines strong fleet for 2009 Olympic 470 Class Australian Championships

Olympic sailing Gold medalist and Australian Sailing Team member Malcolm Page headlines a large fleet of competitors at the 2009 Olympic 470 Class Australian Championship beginning in Port Lincoln on Thursday, 22 January.

Page, who famously won Gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games with Nathan Wilmot, will campaign the 2009 Australian Championship with new skipper Mathew Belcher.

The Port Lincoln regatta is just the second for new pairing Page and Belcher after a first up victory at Sail Melbourne in December. They are looking forward to building a long and successful partnership as the sailing world looks ahead to London 2012.

“Our new partnership is going very well so far with, things progressing easily and we’re happy with the level that we’re at, the team work has been great,“ said Page.

“We’d love to come away from Port Lincoln with another title but Mathew and I know that there are some good, young, guys coming through the sport who are certainly going to push us along.”

“In 2009 our main focus will be the World Championships so we’re looking to balance our commitments as we head into the European summer and pace ourselves towards London,” he said.

The two have been working closely with members of the Australian Sailing Development Squad and this will continue throughout the upcoming championships.

“Mathew and I have had a lot to do with the ASDS, helping out at camps throughout Australia. We have a very talented group of sailors coming through and it’s going to be great to have some home grown sparing partners in the lead up to London 2012,” said Page.

Page and Belcher are a part of an impressive 17 boat fleet which will contest 11 races, with the final races held on Australia Day. Page’s Gold medal victory in 2008 has seen an increased interest in the 470 class with the win inspiring sailors from across Australia to get involved in the class.

In what is set to be a close five days of racing home ground advantage will be with Port Lincoln sailor Georgina Kemp who will be alongside Adelaide’s Catherine Shanks. Kemp and Shanks return to their home state after a busy December which saw them contest the Sail Sydney and Sail Melbourne regattas.

Do Not Risk Going Without a 406!

Tracey Jiggins, Wednesday, 21 January 2009

Analogue 121.5 MHz beacons will no longer be detected by satellite from 1 February 2009

Analogue 121.5 MHz beacons will no longer be detected by satellite from 1 February 2009. The internationally owned satellites will be switched off and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority that coordinates all aviation and maritime search and rescue across Australia’s 53 million square kilometre search and rescue region, will no longer have the ability to detect an analogue distress beacon via satellite.  Australia has no capacity to delay the switch off date of the satellites, however, AMSA and State/NT agencies have been informing the public of this date since the announcement was made in 2000.

To ensure your life and the lives of your family are safe during recreational activities on land, sea or in the air, it is essential to switch to a 406 MHz distress beacon immediately.

While the 1 February 2009 cessation date has been widely known for some considerable time, the last minute rush by consumers to purchase a 406 MHz beacon has resulted in some shortage of supplies.  If you are having difficulty purchasing a distress beacon, you should ensure your name is placed on a waiting list.

Digital technology provides AMSA with a faster notification and more accurate location, enabling a quicker response to your distress situation.  These include EPIRB (Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacons) for use on water, PLB (Personal Locator Beacons) for land use, and ELT (Emergency Locator Transmitters) in aircraft.

If you continue to rely upon a 121.5 MHz analogue beacon in a distress situation rescue authorities may never hear you.

406 MHz beacons must be registered with AMSA. Registration is free and can be done on-line at the AMSA web site.

When upgrading to a 406 MHz distress beacon it is essential that old analogue models are appropriately disabled and disposed of responsibly so that they do not trigger false alarms. Battery World shops provide free disposal.

More advice about distress beacons is available from the AMSA web site: www.amsa.gov.au/beacons or by calling 1800 406 406.

Expressions of Interest are being sought from Sailors with Disabilities wishing to campaign for the London 2012 Paralympic Games and beyond.

Craig Heydon, Wednesday, 14 January 2009

As we enter 2009, the Paralympic Sailing Program is focusing its attention on identifying athletes who could represent Australia in London and at future Paralympic Games

Athletes chosen will form the Australian Paralympic Sailing Development Squad for 2009.

The 2012 Paralympic Games will be held in Weymouth, UK from 29 August until the 9th September 2012, just over 1,000 days from now.  As we enter 2009, the Paralympic Sailing Program is focusing its attention on identifying athletes who could represent Australia in London and at future Paralympic Games.

Sailing appeared as a demonstration sport at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games and in Sydney 2000 was included in the Paralympic Games Competition program as a medal sport.  In 2000, Australia secured a Gold Medal in the Sonar Class, and in 2008 achieved Silver in the SKUD-18 Class, and Bronze in the Sonar.

The three classes sailed at the Paralympic Games in 2012 will be:

·                     1 person keelboat – 2.4mR.

·                     2 person keelboat – SKUD-18.

·                     3 person keelboat – Sonar.

We invite athletes who have the interest, drive and commitment to represent Australia and continue the success of Australian Paralympic Sailing to contact us regarding the opportunities and support that may be available.

Note: Sailors need to satisfy minimum disability criteria of the IFDS Functional Classification System (1st January 2009).

Athletes are asked to register their interest with Paralympic Program Co-ordinator, Sarina Macpherson (contact details below). Athletes should include the following information to Sarina by the 6th February 2009:

-         Contact Details

-         A brief sailing CV

-         Training and/or regatta program if known.

Champions Crowned at the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship 2009

Laura Baldwin, Yachting Australia, Sunday, 11 January 2009

122 boats, 177 competitors raced at this years’ pinnacle Australian youth sailing regatta, the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship which was conducted by the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club (MOFSC)

Selection event for the 2009 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Team

11th January ~ 2009 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Champions Crowned

122 boats, 177 competitors raced at this years’ pinnacle Australian youth sailing regatta, the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship which was conducted by the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club (MOFSC). The club is a hidden gem, some even saying it is the best sailing venue in Australia. The teams of officials and volunteers did a fantastic job of making sure everything ran smoothly. The Race Officers, Chris Kelly and Robin Olsen successfully ran all eleven scheduled races across the four days in a mixture of conditions with one lighter wind race in the morning gradient breeze and two strong wind races in the sea breeze each afternoon.

11 Champions were crowned across the five classes; Laser Radial, BIC Techno, 420, Laser 4.7 and 29er. Queensland produced the most winners this year with, Curtis Skinner winning in the Laser Radial Boys, Ashley Stoddart in the Laser Radial Girls, Luke Baillie in the BIC Techno Boys, Joanna Sterling in the BIC Techno Girls and the first Australian in the Laser 4.7 was Andrew Torpelund. Victoria was the next highest performing state, cleaning up in the 29er class with James Sly & Andrew Gillies winning the boys and Bec Tuma & Emma  Louise Daly winning the girls and Alison Dale won the Laser 4.7 Girls. Western Australia won the Boys 420 title with David Gilmour and James Omay and South Australia won the Girls 420 title with Lauren Thredgold & Megan Soulsby.

Not only were there 11 National titles won here but this event also formed the final part of the selection for the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Sailing Team for the 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship which will be hosted in Buzios, Brazil from 9th to 18th July. The winners are:

The OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Team 2009:

Yachting Queensland's State High-Performance Coach, Adrian Finglas spoke with pride about his young sailors, "They have all put in a huge amount of effort and worked really hard over the last 12 months. Queensland hasn't had a sailor qualify for the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Team since 2000 and to get to where we are today, winning four of the seven events required a cultural shift to steer sailors away from the very highly regarded Schools Teams Racing Program and into fleet racing and then change the attitudes of the youngsters and teach them to believe in themselves".

For the second time Yachting Australia also include the opportunity for competitor’s results to contribute to the ‘State Cup’. A perpetual trophy awarded to the best performing Australian state. The ‘State Cup’ is seen as an exciting initiative to further build the competitive experience and inter-state rivalries among the competitors who travel from across Australia to compete at the event. And the 2009 State Cup winner is Western Australia

The Nick Peate Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Sportsmanship was awarded by Nicks' mother, Janice Peate who gave a touching speach and awarded the prize to James Sly and Andrew Gillies in the 29er class for their show of sportsmanship on the race course, who despite being the right of way boat, held back from sailing through the gate to the finish to allow the Laser 4.7 to finish rounding the marks without causing any disruption.

Nick Peate won the 2008 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship in the 29er but sadly died before he got to compete in the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship. It is the values of fair play and sportsmanship that Nick held dear, that this award aims to recognise.

The Jury have been busy on the water during the day and resolving protests by night. It is good to see 19 year old 470 sailor, Tristan Brown on the Jury at this regatta. Tristan explained what it is like, "It is tough work being on the Jury, the days are long and intense concentration is required the whole time. It’s been really interesting to see things through the Juries eyes and I’ve learned a lot like, where the hot spots are”

Queenslands Curtis Skinner won the final race and took the overall title and also won selection to the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Team 2009 along with his team mate, Ashley Stoddart. When the pair came ashore they were met by proud parents, coaches and friends and showered in Champaign before being thrown into the water by fellow competitors as part of the traditional end of regatta winning celebrations.

"This is awesome! I'm going to Brazil, it's windy there too so I am really looking forward to it" Curtis told and he continued, "I finished 2nd in the trials last year to Tom Burton in the Laser which motivated me more to make it this time. All the hard work and hard hours of hiking has paid off, everything has fallen into place at the right time and I won! WHOOO!"

Ashley was still in shock when she first got back to shore. "It hasn't sunk in yet. I've worked for this for so long and I looked at Gabrielle King winning for years and admired her so much that I didn't think I would ever be at that level but now I am!"

Winning the final race and the overall title was Nicolas Poree (FRA) who spoke enthusiastically about his three weeks racing in Australia, "I like it very much here, Australia is a very beautiful place and Western Australia especially and the people are very nice". When asked how winning feels he said, "It feels exciting to win but I just sail for fun". Sailing for fun seems to be a successful way to go about things if Nicolas tally of title wins is anything to go by as the former New Zealand and Australian Optimist Champion also won this year's Australian Laser 4.7 Class Championship.

Queenslander, Andrew Torpelund was the top Australian and second overall in the Laser 4.7 Boys event ahead of Zac Pullen from Tasmania. Andrew credited his coach, Adrian Finglas saying, "Aids told me, 'You don't win regattas by winning races, you win by being consistent' and that stuck with me. I didn't win a single race this regatta"

Winning the first race today wasn't enough to defend Ashlie Lane's title and she finished up 3rd overall behind 2nd placed Martina Ciotti and the new Laser 4.7 Girls Champion, Alison Dale from Victoria. Ashlie likes the independence of singlehanded sailing and is planning to move into the Laser Radial class next year and aim for the youth worlds and then the Olympics.

In the skiff event, James Sly and Andrew Gillies reclaimed the lead after scoring a 2nd and winning the final race. The team has sailed together for two years and hope to continue on together all the way to the Olympic Games in a 49er. When asked, why skiffs? They said, "Because they are fast and exciting!". The team had a hairy bottom mark rounding in the first race yesterday when they had a collision with a windsurfer, "We ended up with a chunk of BIC Techno hanging off our forestay! It wasn't our fault and put the pressure on us to pull back the ground we lost but we are used to that and have won which feels fantastic!"

Adam Glaskin and James Loughridge from WA finish 2nd with Angus Rankin and James Dahl in third.

2009 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship

Selection event for the 2009 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Team

    10th January 2009

The sea breeze kicked in earlier today giving the sailors three races in solid winds. This regatta has been a test of endurance and stamina with the strong sea breeze kicking in each day for most of the racing. The morning gardient breeze is lighter and the first race each day has been held in this wind so giving a variety of conditions and testing more skills.

The Optimist National Championship is running alongside this event to inspire the youngsters to continue onto youth level competition. With the two events coinciding at th same venue, the pathway to follow is clear to see with all the options there in front of the juniors; 1-Person Dinghy, 2-Person Dinghy, Skiff or Windsurfing. Many of the youth sailors interviewed this week explained that it was at this regatta when they were sailing Optimists that they first decided what they wanted to go onto sail next.

Stephen Bond of Ozi Opti has been stationed ashore to give assistance to any needy sailors, offering spares and repairs to the 124 boat fleet, whilst Performance Sailcraft Australia (PSA) has been running ‘Try Sailing & Windsurfing’ off the beach in the safety of the harbour. The flat water and sheltered winds make it an ideal location for the youngsters to try new skills. The two RS Fevas and two BIC Technos have been whizzing about all day every day.

With only two races remaining the pressure is being felt by some and has lifted from others. The final day of racing will see 12 Australian titles awarded and the conclusion of the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Team Trials with one sailor in each of the following classes gaining selection to represent Australia in the most prestigious international event at youth level, the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship. The World Championship will be hosted in Brazil later this year.

    Windsurfing Event, BIC Techno 293Class:

There is no change to the overall leader board after today’s racing with Queensland's Luke Baillie still leading the charge after scoring a 1, 2, 2. Last year's Champion, Tom England from Victoria after winning the last two races. Local sailor, Eamon Robertshaw is thrilled to be in bronze medal position going into the final day. Eamon was able to get started in windsurfing after winning the, 'Peter Wainwright Memorial Award' for the 'most outstanding junior' and a grant of $1000 which he put towards buying a BIC Techno 293. With a coach like Beijing 2008 Olympic Coach, Arthur Brett it is easy to see why the youngster is gaining success so quickly.

One-Person Dinghy Event, Laser Radial Class:

Queensland’s Ashley Stoddart gave the most outstanding performance today, winning the first race followed by a 3rd and 2nd. These results move her from 8th to equal 2nd on the overall leader board against the boys. When asked what Ashley thought was making her outperform the competition she answered, “I think it’s all in the recovery, I have been focusing on that a lot. Making sure I eat and drink enough and at the right times to keep the energy levels high so that I can out hike everyone” she said between mouthfuls of pasta with meat source and Powerade.

With only two races remaining, fifteen year old Ashley Stoddart has the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Team Trials in the Laser Radial Girls fleet all but sown up. The same can be said in the Laser Radial Boy’s trials with Curtis Skinner, also from Queensland who leads this regatta overall after winning five of the nine races.

    Two-Person Dinghy Event, 420 Class:

Western Australia’s, David Gilmour and James Omay have led the 420 regatta from day one, showing exceptional strong wind boat handling. The standings are still close at the top with Matthew Jerwood and Patrick Vos winning the last two races so tomorrows races are still important.

Queensland’s Sean Ott and Adam Lahey found form today scoring 3, 2, 3 moving them up to bronze medal position but on equal points with the 4th placed Singaporean Team and one point from 5th placed Angus Galloway and Alexander Gough who are achieving above their expectations. The Queensland Team where 2nd overall going into today after winning the opening race and consistently finishing at the front end of the fleet. The team came through the Schools Team Racing program and have been sailing 420 together for just under a year. Alex told, “Our performance here gives us a good feeling of our potential for future success. We have two years left at Youth level to achieve our goal of winning selection onto the OAMPS Youth Team”.

Angus and Alex’s Teams Racing Coach educated them in the pathways and sold them on the Olympic Dream. Their preferred class is the 470 because “To win in a 470 is a tougher challenge than other classes because it requires more skills in tuning and racing, it’s not just a case of going fast”. Both boys’ eyes sparkled as they spoke and it is clear to see that they are hungry for success and sold on the sport of sailing. Angus credited their coach, Adrian Finglas saying, “Adrian is an awesome coach, he connects on a personal level and his enthusiasm and passion for the sport it very motivational”.

Red eyed from the sun and salt spray, Lauren Thredgold and Megan Soulsby from South Australia happily told, “We had a great day, we were beating the boys until the final reach, it was really good out there”. The team is leading the Youth Team trials after today but it is still close on points with Aimee Negri and Breanna Vos keeping the pressure on.

2009 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship

Selection event for the 2009 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Team

    9th January 2009

The boat park comes alive first thing in the morning with enthusiastic sailors readying themselves and their equipment for the days racing. With three races scheduled each day, long days on the water are to be expected so plenty of food, water and sunscreen is required. It is good to look around the rigging area and see how professional all the teams are with their preparation.

The state team leaders and coaches that are supporting the kids here are of the highest calibre, sharing their wealth of knowledge and expertise. New South Wales has Sydney 2000 470 Olympic Gold Medallist helm, Jenny Armstrong. Queensland has Beijing 2008 Yngling Olympic Coach, Adrian Finglas. Western Australia has Sydney 2000 470 Olympic Gold Medallist crew, Belinda Stowell. Victoria has Coach to the USA and CZE Olympic 470 Teams in Beijing 2008, Bunny Warren. South Australia has Atlanta 1996 Olympic Windsurfer, Brendan Todd. The above lists just a handful of the sailing stars precent in Mandurah this week.

The ‘Medal Maker’, Victor Kovalenko who has coached eight 470 teams to win Olympic Medals, five of them gold, spent two days here. It is wonderful to see the effect he has in inspiring the young sailors. Their body language radiates their excitement at being in the presence of such a legend and they hang, wide eyed on every word he says.

The sun shone bright all day in the clear blue sky with temperatures reaching highs of 36 degrees. The sea breeze clocked in after race one. "The sea breeze was stronger today than yesterday, or maybe I am just more tiered today? It was one or the other, or both!"  Elizabeth Yin from Singapore.

    Windsurfing Event, BIC Techno 293Class:

There is a new leader in the BIC Techno 293 after day two of racing with Luke Baillie (QLD) over taking last years Champion, Tom England (VIC) after winning the first and last race. The middle race today was won by the third placed Eamon Robertshaw (WA).

Eamon was buzzing after winning his first ever heat, “It felt so good to win! I was sailing really well but I didn’t finish with much style as I got some weed stuck on my fin and slipped slowly sideways across the finish”. Fifteen year old Eamon was inspired to take up windsurfing when he saw the event at last years Championship where he was racing in the Optimist. An avid skateboarder, he felt windsurfing was ‘way more fun than sailing’ and has his heart set on moving onto an RS:X and is dreaming of racing at Olympic level.

Sixteen year old, Joanna Sterling from Queensland is the leading lady and credits her four years windsurfing experience for her success at this regatta but says, “I have never sailed a boat or raced until I started in the BIC Techno 293 in November 2008 so this is all pretty new to me but I am really enjoying it”.

Fellow Queenslander and training partner to Joanna, Luke Baillie is surprised to find himself in the lead after day two. Luke has been windsurfing seven years ago aged 10 and has mixed up slalom, speed & wave sailing but only took to the BIC Techno 293 two months ago. “My goal here is to have fun and my dream goal is to live in Hawii or here and windsurf everyday”.

One-Person Dinghy Event, Laser Radial Class:

Queensland’s, Curtis Skinner takes the lead after winning the final two races today, taking his heat win score to three. The defending Champion, Singaporean, Scott Sydney won the first heat and explained, “My goal is to be top 2 boys at this regatta so I am in a good place right now but we are only really half way through the event”. Scott Sydney actually lives in Sydney and trains out of Woollahra Sailing Club with Australian Sailing Development Squad member, Alex South and a few others. He rates Australia as the best place to train because, “There is such a large variety of conditions here compared with Singapore where it is the same light winds everyday. I really feel that training here the last two years has improved my level a lot. I love the conditions here in Mandurah, it is a really great venue”.

Another Singaporean is leading the Laser Radial Girls. Seventeen year old, Elizabeth Yin who qualified her Country for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games at the 2008 Laser Radial World Championship by finishing 19th. Her team mate won the selection to go to the Games but this has only helped to motivate Elizabeth even more to want to achieve her Olympic dream in London 2012. Winning the opening race of the regatta felt “Really good and to to beat the boys too is a great feeling”. Winning is not something new to her though as she already holds two World titles, in the Byte in 2006 and the Laser 4.7 in 2008.

Beating all the boys to take the first heat of the day was Griselda Khng & Cecilia Low (SIN). Coming all the way from Norway, Harald Faste has made the trip to Australia to escape the bitter cold winter winds and enjoy summer sailing down under, for the third year running. “Winning the opening race felt really good. It’s only the second time I have won a race and I really like the feeling. One day I want to feel what it is like to win the Olympic Games”.

Matt Wearn (WA) won the opening race today with the overall leader, Nicolas Poree (FRA) winning the final two races giving him a massive 14 point lead over second placed, Andrew Torpellund (QLD) who is 5 points ahead of Nicholas Howe (NSW).

    Two-Person Skiff Event, 29er Class:

2008 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Team Coach, Larry Cargill told of boats ‘jumping off wave tops’ and sailors ‘catching great rides’. The conditions are challenging for skiffs as seen in the Medal Race in Beijing, skiffs are really designed for flat water but these sailors are holding their own and all coming off the water with big smiles on their faces.

    Windsurfing Event, BIC Techno 293Class:

In the BIC Technos’ second appearance as the Windsurfing Class at this Championship the entries have increased from 5 to 9 with the Girls getting an event this year with 3 female entries. The competitors come from 4 different states showing that windsurfing is spreading. In some states such as NSW there has been a massive push to boost the sport with a team of enthusiasts of the highest calibre with three time Olympian and former World Champion, Jessica Crisp fronting a campaign to share her skills and knowledge with the next generation.

Jessica runs training and racing, along with her Beijing Olympics training partner in the RS:X, Janice Stolstrom from Norway and talented Coach, Jenni Bonnitcha. The team use different clubs around Sydney Harbour with training from MHYC on Tuesday and racing at DSC on Wednesdays, WSC on Thursdays and back to MHYC on Fridays followed by a BBQ. Jessica bought 12 One-Design Windsurfers and charters them out for $10, an unbelievable bargain when considering the level of coaching the sailors get! And it’s not just for the kids, many adults have been inspired to dig their old boards out of the garage and join in the fun.

To find out more, come along to the lawn between MHYC and MHASC on Friday 9th January..

Yachting Australia has also invested in windsurfing’s development with the purchase of 10 BIC Techno 293 boards that rotate around the states to enable learn to windsurf courses to run.

One-Person Dinghy Event, Laser Radial Class:

The fleet of 30 sailors come from two different Countries and six different states and is being lead by the two sailors from Singapore with the 2008 Beijing Olympic representative, Elizabeth Yin having a 2 point lead over Scott Sydney. Scott does actually live in Sydney and trains out of Woollahra Sailing Club at Rose Bay. The top Aussie sitting in third place is Mark Whittington from WA.

Last year's Laser Radial champion, Gabrielle King and Laser Champion,Tom Burton are both at the regatta venue catching up with friends and offering advice to sailors as they are no longer youths. They are on a break between the Laser / Laser Radial National Championship and the Asia Pacific Regatta. Gabrielle added another gold medal to her collection with winning the Women’s title at the National Championship. The current leaders of the trials after the Laser Radial Class Championship in Freemantle last week are Ashley Stoddart in the girls and Curtis Skinner in the boys.

After scoring 15, 3, 9 today in the combined boys and girls Laser Radial fleet, Ashley Stoddart (QLD) is just 2 points ahead of her rival, Alex South (NSW). Ashley talked through her races with the same relaxed manor in which she attacked the day with confidence, “I got a good start in the first race and rounded well at the top mark but the land and sea breeze began to fight making it really tricky and I lost places by the finish but in race two the sea breeze had set in and so after a bad start I was able to tack away quickly to clear my air and use my boat speed advantage to pull back up to 3rd by the end. The same was the case in the final race, again a bad start and a very deep first mark rounding but I pulled back up to 9th so I’m very happy with today. The wind and waves by the end were awesome!”

    Two-Person Dinghy Event, 420 Class:

The Singapore Team has 11 boats competing in the 420 fleet of 45 entries, an impressive turn out. The 2006 Optimist World Championship Silver Medallist and Women’s World Champion, Griselda Khng wasn’t really happy with her days performance but was still enthusiastic about how much she enjoyed the days racing and explained, “We don’t have conditions like this in Singapore, it is always the same at home with flat water and light winds so it is really helpful to race in these different conditions. I like the wind and waves, its good fun!”

With just 8 months experience sailing in the 420, Griselda is showing huge potential for the future and is clear about her goals she explained, “This event together with the Australian 420 National Championship is the trials for the Singapore Team to compete at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship, it’s my goal to win the trials and then to finish top three at the Worlds. My dream goal is to race at the Olympics”.

Before sailing the 420, Griselda spent 7 months sailing a 29er. When asked which she prefers she answered, “I prefer the 420 because I like the technical side of the boat and I like that the helm holds the main sheet as it gives me better feel for the boat. In the 29er the crew does most of the work to sail the boat, the helm just holds the tiller and the jib. Having said that I do like the speed of the 29er and I would be happy to race either the 29erXX or 470 at the Olympic Games one day”.

The Singaporean Team looks to be doing something right after cleaning up at the Australian 420 Class Championship last week with Griselda Khng & Cecilia Low winning the girls and Justin Lin & Sherman Cheng winning the overall title. Talking to Griselda it was clear that the difference is in the level of training. Griselda goes to a ‘special sports school’ where she studies from 7am to 11am and then sails between 2 – 3 hours before returning to school to continue her studies from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.

After a difficult opening race, Byron White and Jay Griffin (NSW) won the following two races. “Once the sea breeze kicked in at the end of the first race the conditions became rough out there, big winds of 20+ knots and big seas but that’s what we do best in so we were enjoying it”, Byron commented. Jay continued to explain the reasons for their success, “We got good starts, winning the bias pin end of the line in race two and just down from the pin in race three. The left paid once the sea breeze kicked in and we were fast”.

The pair teamed up only six months ago but have been friends for years after meeting through the CYCA Youth Match Race program they share common goals, to win the Olympics, the World Match Race Tour and the America’s Cup. When asked what class they would ideally like to compete in at the Olympics they were torn between the 49er for it’s exciting speed and the 470 for it’s technical challenge and required ‘smarts’.

David Gilmour & James Omay from WA lead after scoring 2, 3, 5. After winning the opening race, Angus Galloway & Alexander Gough from QLD are just 2 points behind the leaders and one point infront of Byron White & Jay Griffin from NSW.

Australian Sailing Team Contract Coaches - Expressions of Interest

Katie Culbert, Wednesday, 7 January 2009

The AST is now calling for expressions of interest for contract coaching positions.

The Australian Sailing Team (AST) was established in 2005 with a view to providing a greater focus on winning medals in sailing at the Olympic Games. The AST is the official national representative sailing team for the Olympic classes and comprises of the best sailors in their classes in Australia. In 2008 Australia won 2 gold and 1 silver medal at the Olympic Games, second best performing nation.

The AST is now working towards London 2012 with the aim to be the number one nation. To achieve this, the AST is currently recruiting coaches for a number of classes, including women’s match racing, and is calling for expressions of interest from coaches in Australia and around the world.

The positions will be on a contract basis with a small retainer paid and then the number of days per annum negotiated for each class.

Consideration will be given to those with appropriate coaching qualifications.

If you are interested in working with one of the world’s best sailing teams, then please submit an expression of interest detailing:

    • your preferred classes,
    • classes/athletes you have worked with
    • coaching qualifications
    • your home base
    • any other relevant information

Preparations Underway at the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship

Laura Baldwin, Yachting Australia, Wednesday, 7 January 2009

2009 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship

Selection event for the 2009 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Team

    7th January 2009:

The magnificent Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club opened its’ doors for the final day of registration. The hustle and bustle started early with competitors finalising their preparations before the practise race that started at 2pm today. With a ridge of high pressure is developing south of the state, strong sea breezes are expected until the final day of racing. Race Officer, Chris Kelly is preparing his team to get most of the 11 races completed before Sunday due to the light and variable breeze forecast that day. The regatta is therefore shaping up to be a test of strong wind skills, fitness and endurance.

The Club Commodore, Gerry Pieterson has reason to be proud of his club as the facilities are fantastic. For the sailors there are large open rigging lawns, a specially built harbour for safe launching straight out to the pristine waters of Comet Bay, changing rooms and cafes. For the parents and support staff and volunteers there is an impressive sized bar and seating area.

Last years OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Team 29er helm, Byron White is back this year with a new class and crew. The 15 year old from Sydney won the silver medal at the 2008 29er World Championships and finished 5th with his crew Rhys Mara at the 2008 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship in Denmark. This year Byron is sailing the 420 with Jay Griffin. The pair finished 5th in the Australian 420 Class Championship last week which was hosted at Royal Perth Yacht Club. Byron is feeling confident going into the final round of the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Team Trials, “We have great speed in these conditions. We really like the strong winds and big waves. I think it’s going to be a good event, it’s been very well organised so far”.

Chasing Byron and Jay after finishing 6th at the 420 Class Championship are Karl Bromfield and Marcus Conway from NSW. Marcus excitedly explained how his result qualified him to compete at the 2009 420 Class World Championship in Lake Garda. “Now to qualify for the Youth Worlds would be the icing on the cake. We are currently 5th in the trials so there is a chance. It’s been really great experiencing different racing conditions at these two event venues and it should mix things up a bit. We had flat water on the Swan River last week at Class Nationals and this week we have big waves. We like the big waves best”. Marcus is planning to follow his twin brothers into the 470 fleet next year.

Leading the 420 Class in the 2009 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Team Trials are Western Australia’s David Gilmore and James Omay followed by fellow WAIS sailors, Matthew Jerwood and Patrick Vos. In third place are Sean Ott and Adam Lahey from Queensland.

In the women’s 420 fleet, Lauren Thredgold and Megan Soulsby, members of Adelaide Sailing Club are preparing themselves for their third Australian Youth Championship and are hoping it will be third time lucky. “We are 2nd in the trials for the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Youth Team after the Australian 420 Class Championship behind Amy Kivell and Jaqueline Gurr. This is my last chance as I turn 18 next year”  Lauren continued, “After this my goal is to be as good as Tessa Parkinson and Elise Rechichi, the 470 Olympic Gold Medallists!”

Today's Forecast: Winds becoming S/SW 18/23 knots early afternoon and increasing to S/SW 20/30 knots mid afternoon. Seas 1.5m to 2.0m.
