Sailing breaks 10 year drought – Winner of two Australian Sport Awards - It had been 10 years since Sailing had won an Australian Sport Award, but last night (2/3/05) the drought was broken. For the first time ever, in the 25 year history of the prestigious sport awards night, Sailing picked up two gongs – Young Australian Team of the Year and Official of the Year.

Over 500 guests attended the 25th Australian Sport Awards held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour, hosted for the fourth time by SBS Sports Presenter, Les Murray.

It was well worth the trip from Western Australia (WA) for youth sailors Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson. The girls, members of the 2004 Australian Youth Team, won the Young Australian Team of the Year Award
.

Sailing’s second award was won by David Tillett in the Official of the Year category. Tillett came up against Mary Seefried from the Equestrian Federation of Australia and Scott Butler from Basketball Australia.

Winning two awards and thus being recognised nationally was a great honour and achievement for the Sport. Throughout the night people from a variety of different sports approached Sailing's winners and finalists to relay their congratulations and admiration. As one sailing finalist mentioned, "it was a long time between drinks but it was worth the 10 year wait".
